TO CELEBRATE Heritage Day and the 90th birthday of the Voortrekkers, three teams from the Polsslag Voortrekker Commando made history, by creating “the world’s longest milk tart”, at 12m.

The teams were made up of Grade one, two and three pupils. The tart is being showcased today, during the food festival at the Voortrekker Monument.

The Voortrekkers is a cultural movement that empowers modern Afrikaner children and youth.

Hermien Wolff, who facilitated the activity, said they felt proud of the end-product and were thankful to all the children who participated.

Wolff and her team used 120 litres of milk, 480 eggs, 25kg sugar, 36kg butter, and 36kg biscuits to make the tart.

Seven-year-old Etienne Buis, who participated in the initiative, said he enjoyed making the tart and was proud that he was part of this historic activity.

Liza Janse van Rensburg said their aim was to show children how things were done back in the Voortrekker times.

Janse van Rensburg and her family have a permanent camp at the monument, where they do not use electricity or modern equipment.

“We sleep on the ox wagon, and we make our own butter, candles, and coffee, the traditional way,” she said.
