Act against GBV – Malema

EFF leader Julius Malema has called on universities to take more stringent measures in addressing rape and gender-based violence (GBV) on campuses.

Malema was yesterday addressing students from universities across Cape Town, on the grounds of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s Bellville campus.

Malema suggested that in order to effectively deal with GBV on campuses, the government must take DNA samples from each citizen in the country so that perpetrators could be held accountable.

“Campuses and universities don’t take this issue of rape very seriously. When these cases are reported at police stations and universities, they take a long time to follow up matters and before you know it the case has disappeared,” he said.

“Each campus is supposed to be a safe haven for all children, not a potential place for rapists.

“Fighters (EFF) must make it their responsibility to always look for these rapists and when they are caught, they must be exposed. When rapists are found guilty their names must be published. There must be a list where you find the names of all rapists because this nonsense needs to stop.

“People must learn to propose and not feel entitled to the bodies of women. Women must have a right to agree and not to agree to any proposal. We must not breed rapists on our campuses.

“When you rape, you commit murder because you are going to kill that person inside, and that is permanent,” Malema said.

He added that people who committed GBV did not belong to society, saying children and women must at all times be safe at home, work, places of study such as schools and universities and places of worship.

The EFF leader said students fighting for their rights should not be arrested as they were pushing to ensure a better future for not just themselves, but other youngsters as well.
