Own chips

HYUNDAI Motor’s global chief operating officer announced that the carmaker wants to develop its own chips to reduce its reliance on chipmakers.

A global shortage of semiconductors, triggered partly by surging demand for laptops and other electronic products during the pandemic, has shuttered some vehicle production lines globally this year.

Hyundai temporarily suspended some factories, but the company’s global chief operating officer Jose Munoz told reporters the worst has passed for the industry chip shortage, adding Hyundai had the “toughest months” in August and September. | Reuters

Anti-riot

SVI Engineering, specialist manufacturer of armoured products, has been contacted by its clients in the mining and security industries for a solution in clearing road barricades during riot action.

Designed from scratch, the SVI antiriot scraper enables standard vehicles, like the Toyota Land Cruiser 79, to safely clear a path through the debris to allow security and medical personnel access to critical locations.

The SVI anti-riot scraper and hydraulic power pack come as a unit for easy installation in a couple of hours. The mass of around 100kg is comparable to a standard bull bar and winch fitted to many off-road vehicles. | IOL Motoring

Land Rover

YOU can’t help but feel a little sorry for the Land Rover Discovery. As capable and practical as it is, of late the seven-seat SUV has been overshadowed by the new Defender and its retro charms. The new Land Rover Metropolitan Edition aims to help bring some sparkle back to the line-up with numerous visual and spec enhancements.

Due to reach South Africa in the first half of 2022, the Land Rover Discovery Metropolitan Edition will be the new flagship model in the range, and you’ll tell it apart by its 22-inch Diamond Turned alloy wheels as well as its Gloss Grey detailing. | IOL Motoring
