ANC

LAWYERS representing fired ANC staffer Carl Niehaus and his former colleague Macdonald Mathabe have sent a letter of demand to the party officials to pay their outstanding salaries.

The letter of demand from Mabuza Attorneys, representing the duo, was sent this week and addressed to Deputy Secretary-general of the ANC, Jessie Duarte.

The letter demands the ANC honour its liabilities, and in the event of failing to do so, the duo will institute proceedings to declare the ANC insolvent and to be sequestrated. | Political Bureau

Police

WITH fresh memories of police inaction during the July violence and looting, the possible suspension of National SAPS Commissioner Khehla Sitole raises further concerns about election-related security issues, writes Mary de Haas. Sitole’s appointment has seen an improvement in accountability. But grossly irregular interference in operational matters by Minister of Police Bheki Cele is hampering the fight against crime. It is crucial that non-political community members of standing engage with policing through joining community policing forums. | IOL

Alliance

AFTER the local government elections, alliance partners must “force” the ANC to stick to the promises made in the party’s election manifesto, says SA Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande. He said the time had come for the SACP and Cosatu to take over the oversight role from opposition parties and demand that the ANC fulfil all the promises it was making while on the campaign trail. Nzimande said political killings had to stop, otherwise capable people would fear taking public office. | IOL
