Don’t let pandemic stifle interest in education

NORMAN V MAHLANGU |

COVID-19 has successfully ushered in a significant setback for our education system.

Exactly at this time of the year in 1976, the then-youth protested against apartheid education.

Today, their 45-year-old legacy is challenged by a pandemic that forced a sudden shut down of educational institutions. This was followed by a new culture of learning.

If we are not careful, the phenomenon will not only shut down activities – but dreams and life-saving careers might be terminated permanently.

Now is the time that the youth of today to stand on their our own two feet and save their future, by not allowing the destruction posing as Covid-19 to quench their appetite for education.

An old saying says: “You cannot keep birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair”.

You might not have the power to stop the looming wave of the virus, but you've got the power to deprive it of its chance of causing your zeal and resilience for education to rust.
