FNB Art Joburg, one of the leading art fairs in the City of Gold, is bringing the best artists under one roof at Open City.

Open City, a new initiative launched by FNB Art Joburg, is a fourday gallery weekend across the Rosebank precinct, from October 28-31.

During the gallery weekend, guests will take a tour through the exhibitions of Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt; a group exhibition co-curated by Anelisa Mangcu of Under The Aegis and Jana Terblanche of African Artist Foundation (AAF). The exhibition explores black portraiture in the practice of painters from southern and west Africa.

The Zone @ Rosebank will be showcasing Of blood, sweat and data, an exhibition co-curated by Studio Nxumalo and Through the Lens Collective.

Their series of documentary photography engages the city of Johannesburg, its people and its dynamic social structure through the mode of portraiture.

Hyde Park Corner NuMetro will screen the Open City Art Film Programme from October 29-31.

Joan Legalamitlwa will be presenting films and videos from South Africa and beyond, addressing how people had to find their path through the “new normal”.

“We’ve partnered with various curators, galleries and restaurants to present a weekend of immersive art experiences and gallery hopping for the people of Joburg to once again safely occupy the spaces we enjoy. Johannesburg is the cultural and economic capital of Africa, and with this year’s initiatives, FNB Art Joburg not only wants to reaffirm the city’s position, but aims to make a meaningful contribution to the city’s economy,” says Mandla Sibeko, founding director of FNB Art Joburg.

Open City will be hosted in conjunction with Design Joburg Collective’s Summer Edition weekend, co-hosted by decor and design hubs in Kramerville, 44 Stanley and Victoria Yards.

All Open City programming is free of charge and open to the public, except for the film programme in partnership with Nu Metro. Those who wish to watch the programme will have to buy the ticket on the Nu Metro website.

FNB Art Joburg will also be hosting an online fair on Artsy that will run from October 28 until November 7.

“We are very excited to be part of the second online edition of the FNB Art Joburg. This year’s event will showcase the arts and our diverse artists in South Africa and the rest of Africa. The event will also highlight the diversity and vibrancy of Johannesburg as the economic hub and destination of innovation, food and best cuisines,” says Bonga Sebesho, head of FNB sponsorships.
