Elderly women lauded

STAFF REPORTER

TO MARK Women’s Day, Midvaal mayor Peter Teixeira celebrated with and honoured 50 elderly women from across the local municipality.

The women were treated to a leisurely boat cruise on the Vaal River.

Teixeira said due to growing socio-economic challenges, elderly women and grandmothers had become the primary caregivers and extended support to raise their grandchildren.

These women play an invaluable role in society and are the backbone of communities, he said.

They instil strong values in different generations as they play a vital role in raising the next generation. They often do this with few resources and assistance from the government, Teixeira added.

“The day was meant to offer some comfort and downtime away from the many responsibilities that they carry. We celebrate and honour them, all the women of Midvaal and South Africa as a whole,” he said.
