The Star E-dition

Deputy President David Mabuza announced his resignation at his brother’s funeral. Twitter reacted:

@watsenaam

Cyril asked David Mabuza to stay on. Why? What has he done besides medical tourism to Russia? Cyril and Mabuza probably ate their lunchtime sarmies together in the break room at the Union Buildings. So Cyril will miss him. Only reason I can think of. @GodPenuel

David Mabuza might go down as the most useless politician we had at the highest level. He will be remembered for nothing. That’s quite impressive. His other legacies include running MP as a mafia, selling out to RET at the National Conference and being poisoned.

@vukaningcobo19

Ramaphosa does not trust Mashatile. He is keeping David Mabuza to find a puppet that will follow his (or should I say the Stellenbosch mafia’s) instructions.

@Dukes_Mokoena

It is quite surprising that President Cyril Ramaphosa failed to announce David Mabuza’s resignation. Deputy president is such a key position, hence it needs to be treated accordingly.

@GvanOnselen

David Mabuza resigning as deputy president is about as disappointing and meaningful as discovering your super-sized movie popcorn had one grain at the bottom that never popped; and only discovering it as you about to throw it in the bin anyway.

@MbuyiZa

The Presidency is well in keeping David Mabuza close and finally, he cannot defy the president by walking away. These transitions are difficult for those staffing the office. Is Paul Mashatile even ready to take up the Office?

@drspetersen

David Mabuza said that Ramaphosa accepted his resignation. Cyril Ramaphosa denies accepting Mabuza’s resignation. If a resignation cannot be handled properly, are we surprised the lights are off?

@Bonginko01

There seems to be trouble in paradise. Under normal circumstances, the president would announce such a resignation.

@ETshamugero

David Mabuza the for ever silent deputy president has confirmed his resignation, I think Ramaphosa should dissolve parliament for South Africans to have elections.

@coconutThug

The funny thing is that the first time I get to hear Deputy President David Mabuza’s voice is him retiring. As far as I am concerned, this is the only service he’s ever done for our country – that is, to show what Cyril Ramaphosa should do and that he too should resign.
