Health warnings on individual cigarettes

OTTAWA: A proposed new measure would make Canada the first country in the world to mandate printed health disclaimers on each individual cigarette, Mental Health and Addictions Minister Carolyn Bennet said.

This would help ensure that essential messages reached people, especially the youth “who often access cigarettes one at a time in social situations”.

Bennett said the government expected cigarette packages to feature a wider list of health hazards and unhealthy effects engendered by smoking, including cancers, diabetes and vascular diseases.
